Crypto Goes Pedagogical: Cryptocurrency Added to Merriam-Webster Dictionary: The popular dictionary revealed in a blog post earlier this week that, among 850 new additions to their definitions this March, cryptocurrency, blockchain, and initial coin offering were added to the list. Emily Brewster, an associate editor at Merriam-Webster, explained the organization’s rationale in a press release: “In order for a word to be added to the dictionary it must have widespread, sustained, and meaningful use. These new words have been added to the dictionary because they have become established members of the English language, and are terms people are likely to encounter.”
There is, though, also the possibility that none of these big trials come to fruition, and the current excitement fizzles out, as has happened many times in the past with Bitcoin after big price surges.
Dash is a more private version of Bitcoin that offers faster transactions (InstantSend technology), as well as anonymous transactions (PrivateSend technology). It also has decentralized governance, which makes it the first decentralized autonomous organization.

Naturally, cryptocurrencies were given their first utility in the dark markets. That trend is declining with the majority of business now legitimate. The dollar has had its fair share of direct deaths, too, and will continue to do so. We have to look beyond these initial trials and tribulations toward the potential for a dimensionless value transfer system.
Nakamoto’s extensive online postings have some distinctive characteristics. First of all, there is the flawless English. Over the course of two years, he dashed off about eighty thousand words—the approximate length of a novel—and made only a few typos. He covered topics ranging from the theories of the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises to the history of commodity markets. Perhaps most interestingly, when he created the first fifty bitcoins, now known as the “genesis block,” he permanently embedded a brief line of text into the data: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”
Simply put, whenever a user sends a certain amount of Bitcoins to another user, a third user verifies this transaction and publicly notates it in a ledger which is accessible by anyone. This ledger is called the “blockchain.” As time goes on, more and more users see the transaction in the blockchain and are able to verify it again. The more times each transaction is verified, the more secured it becomes.

The National Bank of Ukraine is considering a creation of its own issuance/turnover/servicing system for a blockchain-based national cryptocurrency. The regulator also announced that blockchain could be a part of a national project called “Cashless Economy”.
Even legitimate exchanges may not have adequate security in place. Last month, a prominent South Korean exchange was forced to shut down after being raided by hackers who stole the cryptocurrencies. In such cases there is very little authorities can do to recover the funds.
Zcash is the next-generation of the Zerocoin protocol, which aimed to create the first truly anonymous cryptocurrency. It uses a recently invented breakthrough technology called Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge (zk-SNARK), and it’s a novel form of zero-knowledge cryptography.
As the price of Bitcoin climbed, investors got interested in other cryptocurrencies. With no explanation, the price of Dogecoin doubled, then tripled. Two months after it was introduced, Mr. Palmer’s joke was worth $50 million, and some early Dogecoin who called themselves “shibes,” were sitting on lucrative stockpiles.
Instead lets go do something useful because blabbing about money laundering, which is done with or without crypto currency and a perceived criminal mining problem, which is so benign it is a godamn joke, is all a bunch of pointless internet conjecture.
Japan’s Financial Services Agency announced it is “looking into” the loss, while most activities on the exchange were suspended Friday. Coincheck said in a statement that the exchange is trying to ensure that consumer assets are protected.
A DCI team, working with students and faculty from the MIT Sloan Management school and MIT Engineering Department, is exploring using digital currency and distributed-ledger technology to securitize transactions among users and owners of blockchain-managed solar microgrids. The goal is to create a secure form of reliable, executable collateral to lower risks for lenders and reduce the cost of financing decentralized renewable energy infrastructure, especially in developing countries. The team is developing an Ethereum-based smart contract that triggers timed access to a solar electricity resource while payments by the user are up to date. The idea is to create a form of “smart property” whose usage rights can be managed remotely. The team is exploring different investment structures to manage these resources, including a cooperatively owned microgrid in which power generation, sharing and usage, as well as payments and administrative protocols are governed via decentralized, blockchain-based mechanisms. Pilot sites are being explored in India and other parts of the developing world. The long-term objective is to create a platform upon which financial engineers can create structured securities backed by solar generation revenues, allowing higher level capital to flow down to local projects and finance the ongoing rollout of a decentralized renewable infrastructure in the developing world.
