Peercoin is another cryptocurrency which uses SHA-256d as its hash algorithm. Created around 2012, this cryptocurrency is one of the first to use both proof-of-work and proof-of-stake systems. The inventor of Peercoin, known as Sunny King, saw a flaw in the proof-of-work system because the rewards for mining are designed to decline over time. This reduction in rewards increases the risk of creating a monopoly when fewer miners are incentivized to continue mining or start mining, thus making the network vulnerable to a 51% share attack. The proof-of-stake system generates new coin depending on the existing wealth of each user, so if you control 1% of the Peercoin currency, each proof-of-stake block will generate an additional 1% of all proof-of-stake blocks. Incorporating a POS system makes it significantly more expensive to try and attain a monopoly over the currency.

Every transaction is a file that consists of the sender’s and recipient’s public keys (wallet addresses) and the amount of coins transferred. The transaction also needs to be signed off by the sender with their private key. All of this is just basic cryptography. Eventually, the transaction is broadcasted in the network, but it needs to be confirmed first.

Cryptocurrencies are released through a process called mining. However, before individual mines cryptocurrency, they are required to resolve a puzzle called a Hash. A hash allows an individual to add the succeeding block which is then recorded and made public in the Blockchain for everyone to see.
It wasn’t until 2009 that the first, decentralized cryptocurrency was launched and developed by none other than the famously reclusive Satoshi Nakamoto. Simply put, his digital form of currency was a work of art. It used cryptography and proof of work functions just as described by Nick Szabo. The whole code was released as open source for anyone to see and work on in 2009.

Winter’s nearly over, folks, and this week, the bears took notice by coming out of hibernation–in the cryptocurrency market, at least. Prices rose strongly in the first half of the week, with coins testing their all-time highs since the January-February crash, but buying power took a turn for the worse in the latter half of the week. Just as prices looked like they might break their previous resistance levels, they bounced downward. Amidst media fanfare of regulatory worries and Mt. Gox crashing the market (again), coins across the board dropped their furthest over the week in the last 48 hours.
You may be wondering why we love Crypto? Firstly, I will confess, some of us have made some great money from it, I would be lying if this wasn’t a significant factor. We also expect to make money from it in the future, we can see how Bitcoin is changing the world, so some of us are going to keep investing in it. You see we need global currencies and we don’t trust any centralised body to run it, and because Bitcoin is decentralised it has solved this need.
